Liverpool can win the race to sign Darwin Nunez with his price tag seemingly being slashed from previously reported heights.

Jurgen Klopp has hardly struggled to get his team to perform in an attacking sense this season and the arrival of Luis Diaz has taken them to new heights.

However, the German manager has seen attackers struggle for form at times with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah both going through dire patches of form at times.

Diogo Jota is struggling at the moment after previously turning every touch in front of goal to gold with the Portuguese forward missing a prime opportunity in the FA Cup final against Chelsea.

Not many managers have such glittering attacking ranks as the Liverpool boss does with Diaz, Jota, Salah, Mane, Divock Origi and Takumi Minamno to choose from on any given matchday.

That said, Mane, Firmino and Salah are all out of contract at the end of next season and with the latter turning 30 in the summer, they will all be in their thirties.

Of course, with sports science having changed the game, it's not necessarily a guarantee of decline anymore but Liverpool's owners, FSG, are wary of renewing the deals of ageing forwards.

We've seen how that can be a massive issue after Arsenal agreed to pay Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang £350,000/week on the back of his stunning form during Project Restart in 2020.

The Gabon striker's decline is something the Reds' owners likely took note of and while Mane and Salah have always been a level or two above the former Gunner, an agreement is yet to be reached for either.

Signing a younger forward showing all the promise of a player about to make a major breakthrough could be wise but it's a decision I'm glad I'm not responsible for.

Liverpool have been reported as being very, very interested in Benfica forward Darwin Nunez, who has 34 goals in 41 games this season.

Man City were said to have a ‘super’ relationship with Benfica and believed they can lower his price tag while Liverpool were simply keeping tabs on the striker.

Erling Haaland has since secured a move to the Etihad and so as far as that old report is concerned, the Reds have surely had a rival for his signature removed from the transfer race.

The Uruguayan has appointed super-agent Jorge Mendes as part of his co-representation with Liverpool one of the clubs they would offer him to.

Klopp was reportedly so "tired of praising the Uruguayan to such an extent that he will end up hiring him.”

Klopp had two close-up viewings of Nunez, with the forward on the score sheet twice against Liverpool in their Champions League quarter-final meetings.

The Athletic journalist states Nunez is highly expected to leave in the summer to the point that Benfica want him to leave as soon as possible so a replacement can be signed.

That "process to fill his potential void is now taking place" with Stuttgart's Sasa Kalajdzic "under strong consideration."
