Exclusive: Michael Edwards' cheeky transfer request similar to genius move to sign Thiago

Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards' has been working hard to get ahead of the club's rivals in the transfer market and with a deal to sign Ibrahima Konate in place, he should pat himself on the back.

Edwards has been working hard since mid-February to get a deal for the French centre-back over the line and has done so, with a €40million move for Konate to be announced once the Premier League season has been wrapped up.

He will need to pass a medical before the release clause is paid in full although Liverpool tried their best to get RB Leipzig to agree to a payment structure that saw them sign Thiago Alcantara last summer for £5million upfront with £20million to be paid off over the next four seasons.

Anfield Central is told that Leipzig rejected an amortisation package for Konate which means the Reds will need to pay the full release clause before they unveil the 21-year-old as a Liverpool player.

As we reported on Tuesday, Liverpool are expecting Konate to initially come in to act as Virgil van Dijk's partner in the starting XI while they give Joe Gomez the necessary time and space to recover from his patellar tendon tear.

The Dutchman might have suffered an ACL rupture but Gomez's injury is a lot more concerning and the club wants to protect him from any unneeded stress on the tendon to make sure he makes a full recovery and avoids undergoing surgery for what would be the fifth time in his Liverpool career.
