Liverpool vs Arsenal performances of the decade

Premier League champions Liverpool travel to the Emirates Stadium this evening to face Arsenal. The Reds will be looking to take all three points as they look to get back to winning ways.

Since the turn of the decade, this is a fixture that Liverpool have excelled in. Their last league defeat to the Gunners came back in April 2015 when Brendan Rodgers was in charge at Anfield.

One thing this fixture has guaranteed is goals with their last nine meetings in competitions providing 49 goals.

Will all that in mind I have selected my top five Liverpool performances against Arsenal from the last decade.

1. Liverpool 5-1 Arsenal - February 9th 2014

This was arguably the best Liverpool performance of the 2013/14 league season. The Gunners arrived at Anfield sitting top of the table under Arsne Wenger, with Liverpool back in fourth.

However, four goals in 20 minutes (Skrtel two, Sterling and Sturridge one) saw the Reds run rampant as they lead 4-0 at halftime. Into the second half and Sterling made it 5-0 before now Arsenal Manager Mikel Arteta scored from the penalty spot.

This was the game that started the belief that maybe Liverpool could mount a title challenge that season.

2. Liverpool 5-5 Arsenal (Liverpool win on penalties) - 30th October 2019

Both sides fielded weaker sides for this Carabao Cup fixture but the quality on the pitch did not disappoint. Then manager Unai Emery's side led 4-2 in the 54th minute at Anfield, as Liverpool dug deep to get the game level in the 62nd minute. Then Joe Willock made it 5-4 in the 70th minute only for Divock Origi to make it 5-5 with the last kick of the game.

The game went straight into a penalty shootout as keeper Caoimhin Kelleher and midfielder Curtis Jones made themselves heroes on the night.

3. Liverpool 4-0 Arsenal - 27th August 2017

This win back in 2017 showed just how capable this side was of winning games without Philippe Coutinho. The build-up to every Liverpool game around this time was dominated by rumours of the Brazilian faking an injury to seal a move to Barcelona.

All those rumours were quickly forgotten as Mane, Salah and Firmino all scored. Substitute Daniel Sturridge also got his name on the scoresheet as all four attackers scored.

4. Liverpool 5-1 Arsenal - 29th December 2018

The importance of this game intensified as fellow title challengers Spurs lost at home to Wolves in the 3pm kick-off. After that result, all eyes descended onto Anfield to see how the Reds would respond.

The response did not look great as within 11 minutes Arsenal led through Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Then a masterclass class from Roberto Firmino saw him make it 1-1 before dancing his way through the Arsenal defence to make it 2-1. A further two goals from Mo Salah and Sadio Mane and a third from Firmino had everyone in the stadium believing this was a side that could win the title.

5. Arsenal 3-4 Liverpool - 14th August 2016

This game was an opening day classic at the Emirates Stadium. A crazy minute saw Theo Walcott's penalty saved by Simon Mingolet only for the Englishman to score a minute later.

A double from Coutinho which included a stunning free-kick was joined by goals from Adam Lallana and debutante Mane. The Reds saw a 4-1 lead become 4-3 but Klopp's men held onto all three points. This was the game that showed how dangerous Liverpool could be when the attack is flowing.
