Liverpool to face RB Leipzig in the last-16

Liverpool have been drawn against German side RB Leipzig in the last-16 of the Champions League.

The draw had taken place today in Nyon, Switzerland after the group stage of the competition concluded last week. The six-time winners will travel to the Red Bull Arena on February 16th for the first leg of the tie.

The draw will see Naby Keita and Péter Gulácsi go up against their former sides for the first time since their departures.

This tie will be closely watched by fans of German football as Jurgen Klopp will go head to head against up and coming manager Julian Nagelsmann. The 33-year old manager is already being closely watched by a lot of teams across Europe.

So with the draw done, I have recapped either side's journey to the last-16 and two other talking points.

Both side's group stage performance

Liverpool finished top of Group D with 13 points from a possible 18 available. Their only defeat came against Atalanta at home on matchday five when the Reds lost 2-0 at home.

The injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez had fans fearing the worst but Klopp's men secured qualification with a game spare.

German side RB Leipzig needed a win on matchday six to secure qualification the knock-out stages. They knew going into the game that if they could beat Manchester United at home then they would qualify regardless of PSG's result. The 3-2 victory over United was enough for Leipzig to go through in second place with 12 points.

Could Konate or Upamecano come up against their former side?

By the time these two sides will face each other the January transfer window will have closed. Interestingly, due to the injuries to both van Dijk and Gomez, the Reds should be looking to sign a centre-half in that window.

Two players that the club has been rumoured to be looking at both play for Liverpool's opponents. Those two players are Leipzig's French pair of Ibrahima Konate and Dayot Upamecano. So could we see one of the two feature for the Reds come February time?

Will league form mean anything going into the game?

Liverpool currently sit joint top of the Premier League with 25 points after 12 games. Interestingly, the German side has 24 points from 11 games and sit just one point off leaders Bayern Munich. If both sides can keep this form up until February could we be set for the tie of the round?

Liverpool fans should be cautious in regards to looking into the league from when going into a two-legged Champions League tie. The Reds were knocked out at this stage last year thanks to Spanish side Atletico Madrid. Klopp's men came into the tie with the league all but wrapped up whereas Atletico ended up finishing 18 behind rivals Real.
