Liverpool tipped to bid for £42M midfield signing - two PL clubs already unsuccessful as he's waiting for Anfield

Liverpool could still ‘make an offer’ for Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes despite initial reports of a move to Anfield being unlikely.

The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for the 23-year-old midfield star and reports are suggesting that there's still a real interest.

Given their current injury situation in midfield, it's highly possible Liverpool will move to strengthen the weakest area of their squad.

The latest reports suggest Jurgen Klopp will green-light an offer to bring Nunes to Anfield sooner rather than later.

Latest reports on Nunes

According to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha (via the Express) Liverpool are preparing a £42M bid for Nunes.

However, MailOnline have claimed that the Merseyside giants have pulled out of the race to sign the midfielder, who has a £51M release clause written into his Sporting contract.

Liverpool are not the only club who have been linked with Nunes - West Ham United had a £25M bid rejected, Chelsea also registered an interest and Wolves also offered big money for Nunes who rejected the offer.

According to Portuguese publication Correia da Manha, Wolves also wanted to sign him and a fee was agreed with Sporting but he rejected a contract to wait for a move to Anfield.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, football insider Dean Jones claimed: “There’s definitely been some feeling around Portugal that Liverpool might make an offer.

“Liverpool have had scouting reports on this guy and Manchester United have actually been linked too, but neither of those have pushed forward at the moment.”

Despite already spending big on Darwin Nunez this summer, a move for Nunes may be necessary given the injury concerns that will last for the duration of the season.

Would he be the right move?

Considering the options on the market, the profile of the player and Liverpool's need for reliability in central midfield - Nunes looks like the most appropriate signing.

His stats suggest he is a Klopp-like player with 22.68 pressures per game putting him in the 82nd percentile amongst midfielders.

He also boasts one of the best dribbling stats for a midfielder, with 3.19 dribbles completed per 90 which would help Liverpool drive up the pitch in a way that they don't currently do.

Given his price tag and his age (23) he could be a key player for the present and future as the likes of Henderson, Thiago, James Milner and other fringe midfielders ponder the future.
