Liverpool should field 4-2-3-1 formation against Crystal Palace - perfect solution with their injury issues

Liverpool are currently in the midst of an injury crisis and could move to a 4-2-3-1 formation in their next game vs Crystal Palace.

With injuries to key men in central midfield, the move to a more attacking formation could be the way forward.

Palace are next up on Monday night at Anfield for the Reds and the Eagles could be the perfect team to try their formation against given no new signings will come in before then.

Travelling to Anfield with question marks over their attack, Liverpool should feel comfortable trying out a formation that has been scarcely used by Jurgen Klopp during his time at the club.

How would the 4-2-3-1 look?

With Thiago facing up to six weeks out, a move to a two-man midfield could take the stress off the current crop of central midfielders by fielding two instead of three.

Defensive stalwart Fabinho could be partnered with captain Jordan Henderson or even veteran James Milner, with both monitoring and shielding the back four.

Despite being 36 (which isn't ideal for a top side to have to rely on) Milner featured in 39 games in all competitions in 2021-22 and is still in incredible physical shape.

Starting with a 4-3-3 with Naby Keita alongside those two having just recovered from an illness means Milner would be the only option off the bench as a natural central midfielder - which is fine for a once-a-week type game but when the cup competitions start, it will cause more issues given current injuries.

Youngster Harvey Elliot can also play in the Keita role too if Klopp wants to persevere with his current and highly successful 4-3-3.

However, allowing for a 'number 10' to sit behind Darwin Nunez could be an interesting and exciting tactical tweak, not that Liverpool need it - they finished last season with the second highest xG in the league and always look a threatening side.

It would allow new signing Fabio Carvalho to play in his natural position - a position which saw him nominated in the Championship Team of the Year last season.

Elliot could also play there which would suit the 19-year-old, who could pick up the ball in advanced areas and find the willing runs of Mohamed Salah, Nunez and Luis Diaz.

Roberto Firmino could roll back the years to what was his natural position, before mastering the false nine. However, he is currently the only backup for Nunez due to Diogo Jota's injury which could see one of either Carvalho or Elliot get the shout over him.
