Liverpool seeking free transfer to cover Fabinho - Another potential bargain buy for Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool seeking free transfer to cover Fabinho - Another potential bargain buy for Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool have conducted a lot of good business this summer - with signings both coming in and leaving the club.

The signings of Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsey all add a new dimension to the squad.

Whilst the outgoings of Sadio Mane, Ben Davies, Neco Williams and Takumi Minamino, to name a few, have allowed the club to recoup a lot of money.

With the window nearing its final weeks, the Reds have been increasingly linked with signing a midfielder; with the latest rumours linking them to a free transfer that could be a bargain for Jurgen Klopp.

Who could Liverpool sign?

The player in question is free agent Florian Grillitsch, who left Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim at the end of the season on the expiry of his contract. He's been linked with a move to a few clubs including Napoli, Arsenal and Roma, but it’s Brighton who is weighing up an offer following the departure of Yves Bissouma - according to The Athletic.

As a versatile midfield option, Grillitsch could provide ample cover for Fabinho as the number six but could also fill in as a number eight if needed.

The Reds have captain Jordan Henderson and veteran James Milner capable of covering the Brazilian defensive midfielder - as well as youth player Tyler Morton if needed but the 26-year-old could solve their midfield worries in a low-cost deal.

Given that Liverpool have been linked with the sale of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - who has been linked with a £10M move to West Ham - and the Austrian midfielder would certainly be an ample replacement.

What qualities does he bring?

Firstly, he's worth £14M, stands at 1.87m and has experience at international level as well as in the Bundesliga, Europa League and UEFA Champions League too.

A key stat would be his distribution; Grillitsch averaged more accurate long balls than any other outfielder in the Bundesliga last season (6.6). Whilst Fabinho only managed 2.1 per game last season.

In terms of his ball-playing tendencies, Smarterscout (via The Athletic) gave Grillitsch a score of 74/99 for progressive passing and 87/99 for xG from ball progression. Those stats tell us he likes to play positive and progressive football - a trait that would fit effortlessly into Klopp's system.

He won't command a big wage, won't expect to start every game and would more than likely be happy to be a squad player as part of an elite team - a win-win for all involved.
