Liverpool reportedly ‘ready to seize opportunity’ and sign €115,000/week midfielder for €0

Liverpool are reportedly ‘ready to seize opportunity’ and sign Marcelo Brozovic from Inter Milan as his contract nears its expiry and would be required to pay €0.

The Merseysiders are regularly linked with top players from all around Europe but it's usually the same type of player.

FSG have a preference for young talent (between 22-24) with a high ceiling that can come in and make an immediate impact that also has the potential to become world-class.

Diogo Jota is a prime example as is new signing Ibrahima Konate although the French defender is finding it tough to break into the side ahead of Joel Matip, who has been Liverpool's best defender this season.

Marcelo Brozovic linked with a move to Anfield

That's why I find it a bit odd that Brozovic has been linked with the Reds as he's already 28 and will be 29 next month and is demanding €6million per year (€115,000/week) from Inter Milan and would likely ask for more from Liverpool to move from Italy.

Calciomercato covers his situation at Inter and although they state that his 'priority is for Inter', they go on to add that with the Serie A champions yet to meet his €6m/year demands, the possibility of leaving the club is slowly becoming a distinct one.

Enter Liverpool. The Premier League outfit is described as one of ‘several sides entering this scenario, ready to seize the opportunity’. PSG and Barcelona are mentioned specifically as well, with the Catalonians previously linked with the Croatian.

Brozovic would have a net negative impact on Liverpool

While I think that signing Brozovic could have some positive effects on Jurgen Klopp's side, most of them would be in the short-term and FSG will once again find themselves in a position where they have a midfielder on the wrong side of 30 on huge wages.

Georginio Wijnaldum just left the club after being refused a new contract at 30, Jordan Henderson is already 31, Thiago is 30 and James Milner is 35. Liverpool cannot afford to find themselves in a position in three years when Fabinho turns 30, where they have a midfield comprised almost entirely of 30+-year-old stars.

It's not healthy and signing Brozovic would only exacerbate this issue which is why signing Franck Kessie, who will be 25 in December, is far more attractive and he would also arrive on a free transfer in the summer should he continue to turn down contract offers from AC Milan.
