Liverpool monitoring £72million Serie A gem "very carefully" despite just adding Luis Diaz for £40m

Liverpool monitoring £72million Serie A gem "very carefully" despite just adding Luis Diaz for £40m

Liverpool are monitoring Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez as an option to further stack their attacking lineup with quality after the addition of Luis Diaz in January.

An agreement was reached with Porto in January for the Colombian. To say he's hit the ground running would be a massive understatement after he terrorised both Trevor Chalobah and Reece James in the Carabao Cup final, helping the Reds lift their first trophy of the season.

Jurgen Klopp is now blessed with an embarrassment of riches upfront and even though he was unable to name Roberto Firmino in the squad for the Wembley showpiece, he still had Diogo Jota, Divock Origi and the League Cup star himself, Takumi Minamino.

Is Lautaro Martinez a Liverpool target for the summer transfer window?

Reports state that the Reds are monitoring the Argentine ahead of a potential summer move from San Siro to Anfield which would give Klopp the undisputed strongest attacking lineup in the Premier League.

Of course, if Martinez joined the Reds it would stand to reason that it would open the door for one of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Divock Origi or Takumi Minamino to leave although it's my belief that Liverpool will keep Mane at the club beyond his current contract.

Mane and Firmino are both out of contract in 2023 while Origi will leave the club as a free agent this summer unless he plays enough games to trigger a clause in his contract which would earn him an additional year on Merseyside.

According to RAI journalist Marco Conterio, via Sport Witness, the Reds are "carefully" keeping tabs on Martinez.

That might seem like Liverpool are slipping into their old ways but Luis Diaz is a player Michael Edwards and Julian Ward were monitoring and he was snapped up in January.

Are Liverpool putting plans into motion to sign Lautaro Martinez from Inter Milan?

Not currently, no. The forward, valued at £72million, is a target but there is no mention of any active plans to bring him in this summer.

“Inter are moving and watching many players, but they are also watching many clubs be interested in their players,” Inter-News [via Sport Witness] report Conterio saying.

“One above all is Lautaro Martinez, who is very popular in England. Liverpool are monitoring him.

“Scamacca is still the name in pole; he would be the perfect profile for the Nerazzurri as a replacement for Edin Dzeko.”

Stylistically, Martinez would be a good fit but against Liverpool, he looked ordinary, bereft of pace and seemed mentally unwilling to take Virgil van Dijk on, making the Dutchman's job that much easier.

For Inter this season, Martinez has 12 goals and 2 assists which is a decent return but as a potential replacement for Roberto Firmino, it must be said that his linkup play isn't on the same level as the Brazilian's.
