Liverpool bid £60M for goalscorer that Arsenal planned to sign in June before Jesus swoop

Liverpool have already signed Darwin Nunez as their big marquee summer signing, but the club reportedly had bid £77M for another young forward as well.

The Reds saw Sadio Mane, Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi leave the club and responded by dropping a club record fee on Nunez, signing him for £85M.

They also picked up the talented 19-year-old Fabio Carvalho from Fulham to round off their summer recruits.

But reports have stated that the Merseyside club had bid for another young forward who's starred in La Liga in recent seasons.

Who were they linked with?

An article covered by Mundo Deportivo today claimed that Real Madrid looked at Real Sociedad's forward Alexander Isak as a potential forward recruit.

However, the club demanded that any club interested would have to pay £77M (€90M) for his services.

The same outlet reported that back in March, Liverpool bid a lower offer of £60M for the Swedish forward.

Clearly, it was not enough to secure his signing, but in fairness to Liverpool, Isak only managed six league goals last season and their offer could have been to test the waters.

Arsenal reportedly planned on signing the tall goalscorer before they switched attention to former Manchester City striker, Gabriel Jesus.

Why is there interest in Isak?

The 1.92m forward has been compared to his compatriot Zlatan Ibrahimovich given his build and ability. He was also the country's youngest ever scorer.

Isak had a true breakout season in 2020/21, netting 17 goals in the league however he failed to build on that momentum and only netted six in the league last season.

A whole host of top clubs were interested in the 22-year-old who offers pace, skill, power and can cause defenders real issues without scoring.

He will need another season as he's shown in the past to force a top club to come calling again as all eyes turn to the start of a new season just weeks away.

Their attacking front-line at Sociedad includes young talent such Takefusa Kubo, Mikel Oyarzabal, Ander Barrenetxea and Brias Mendez and should be a team to watch this season.

With Liverpool already boasting Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota to compete with Nunez for the one central forward position, its unlikely they would spend big on Isak in the future.
