Liverpool want to sign the midfield version of Joel Matip but West Ham have already bid £25M

Liverpool are still reportedly interested in signing 6ft5 Amadou Onana to strengthen their midfield ranks.

Jurgen Klopp's side is coming off a season which saw them come agonisingly close to winning the quadruple.

While the season ended in disappointment, Liverpool still added the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup to their bursting trophy cabinet.

They will also have the chance to start the season on the right foot by winning the FA Community Shield and while it's a glorified friendly, any opportunity to get one over Manchester City is a golden one.

While fans have their minds firmly set on the new season at hand, Liverpool may be hard at work behind the scenes to complete any last-minute business before the window shuts.

They've already recruited Calvin Ramsay, Fabio Carvalho and Darwin Nunez but reports suggest the Reds retain interest in Lille midfielder Amadou Onana.

According to the Athletic, Klopp is among the midfielder's "admirers".

West Ham United, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest are also keen while the Hammers have already made a £25M bid for the 20-year-old.

As far as age and profile are concerned, he's the perfect fit. Julian Ward has already done some great work in line with the club's transfer policy.

It was out of the ordinary to sign Nunez for a club-record bid but targeting Onana is right in line with what we typically expect from Liverpool.

He's young and has huge room for potential. The Reds' coaching staff would jump at the opportunity to nurture and develop the 20-year-old into a Premier League-level star.

Unfortunately, the Athletic states that his most likely destination is London.

That said, he told RMC Sport in 2021 that he'd "sign right away" if Liverpool came calling so that bodes well should Liverpool want to solidify their interest with a bid of their own.
