Liverpool hailed for reaching player agreement for "top class" 25-year-old

Liverpool hailed for reaching player agreement for "top class" 25-year-old

Former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson has hailed Liverpool's decision to give Joe Gomez a new long-term deal.

Gomez, 25, put pen to paper earlier this month to sign a deal that will keep him at Anfield until 2027.

The Reds boast one of the best collections of centre-backs in the world with Gomez alongside Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate.

Gomez started in the first pre-season against Manchester United and will be hoping for more game-time this season.

Robinson says Gomez is "top class"

Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson has hailed the move claiming he could be worth up to £60m in the future as a result of the new deal.

Robinson said: “I think he’s obviously got a great relationship with Jurgen Klopp. Klopp has promised him that there is some kind of future there, and I think it’s a fantastic signing for Liverpool.

“They’ve secured their asset for the next five years, and they now go into this season with four top-class centre-halves.

“It’s brilliant because if he plays then they have the player they wanted, but if he only plays a bit-part role – his value will only go up. They could have a £50-60million centre-half on their hands.”

Verdict

Gomez has fallen down the pecking order at Liverpool with the form of Matip and the emergence of last season's signing Konate.

Both have displaced the former Charlton player who's fallen behind due to injuries and lack of form.

With the new deal in place and Gomez looking fit in pre-season, we expect him to get more regular minutes this season.

He will also have one eye on the World Cup in Qatar and will want to prove himself ahead of the tournament.

Featuring only 21 times last season, we can expect that figure to rise given Klopp's relationship with the centre-back.

Fans will hope the former England international can re-discover the form shown in the title-winning season in 2019/20 where he first rose to acclaim.
