Liverpool have the advantage over Manchester United in the race to sign Benfica star Darwin Nunez, according to reports.

The Uruguayan enjoyed a stellar season with the Portuguese outfit and even scored a brace against Liverpool in the Champions League.

He showcased his deadly finishing ability and had it not been for the offside flag and Alisson's world-class reactions, he may have scored a hattrick in the second leg at Anfield.

The second leg should have be fairly straightforward but Nunez and his teammates fought hard and the aggregate score wound up finishing 6-4.

Nunez has been heavily linked with a move to join Liverpool this summer but he's also a target for Manchester United, with there the possibility for a fierce battle for his signature.

Jurgen Klopp and Erik ten Haag will go 'toe to toe' for the 22-year-old but it would appear the Liverpool boss has the upper hand.

According to the Independent, the two managers will be pitted against each other in the race to sign Darwin Nunez and he could cost as much as £100million.

Nunez prefers to join Liverpool over Manchester United but his representatives are ready to listen to offers from the Red Devils as ten Haag looks to turn things around for the Old Trafford outfit.

According to Correio da Manha, Liverpool will do everything in their power to sign Darwin Nunez, who scored 34 goals and got 4 assists.

Sadio Mane is close to leaving Liverpool.

All that remains for him to seal a move to Bayern Munich is for a fee to be agreed with Bayern Munich.

It's going to take a very special player to replicate what Mane achieved with Liverpool and while Nunez can certainly be a star for the Reds, it's difficult to gauge how he would fare replacing such an iconic figure.

If the young forward can replicate his form this season by scoring 30+ goals for Liverpool in his debut campaign, doubts over his suitability would be quashed.
