Liverpool could use their 'Portuguese connections' to sign 'technically brilliant' midfielder

Liverpool could use their in-house Portuguese connections to secure the highly coveted Matheus Nunes from Sporting CP.

The Reds have been linked with a move for the midfielder this summer alongside Chelsea and Wolverhampton.

In recent times, Liverpool have scouted and signed Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez from the Primeira Liga in Portugal and may sign a third player from the league.

Klopp outlined how they were able to sign Nunez so easily, praising his coaching team's efforts to secure their man.

Speaking to the media on arrival in Singapore, the German manager outlined how they signed Nunez with their Portuguese connections.

"We knew he was an interesting player but we didn't think about signing him and there were no talks [during the Champions League quarter-final with Benfica]," Klopp said.

"In the last few years, you have to say more often than not we got the player we wanted and that's the truth as well. They were not always first picks or choices [or everyone else] and sometimes [people] say 'why him?'

"He was on the list of players and we have this Portuguese department who watch each game even though they struggle a little bit to watch the Benfica games because they are both from the blue side of Porto, but it was clear he was really good".

With a sharp scouting department in place, it's likely Klopp has had one eye on the midfielder impressing in his home country.

Perhaps Liverpool could face the Portuguese champions in the Champions League next season to give the manager a closer look at one of his targets, similar to how the Nunez deal first began.

Nunes is a gifted midfielder but still relatively unknown to the average football fan.

The 23-year-old is a Portuguese international with great ball-carrying ability and someone who loves to draw fouls from those powerful runs.

He was a key part of their league and cup-winning side from last season and featured 50 times scoring four and assisting five goals.

With eight caps for his country, he will look to secure his place in the Portugal squad for the upcoming Qatar World Cup with a strong set of early-season performances.
