Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp reportedly couldn’t believe how good gem was before he signed him this summer

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp reportedly couldn’t believe how good new signing Darwin Nunez was when his side faced Benfica in the UEFA Champions League.

The Reds ran out (fairly) comfortable winners in the quarterfinals of the competition, with Nunez scoring both and away, in clinical fashion, against his future team.

Prior to his £85m signing this summer, Klopp had already been a big fan for some time and the knockout ties only re-affirmed his decision to move for Nunez.

The striker now lines up at one of the biggest clubs in the world following a successful season in Benfica last year which saw him recently crowned as the Primeira Liga Player of the Year for last season.

The manager is a fan of watching players live and the striker impressed enough to earn himself a big move.

Romano revealed: “This Darwin Nunez story started a long time ago. It’s true that Darwin had a fantastic impact against Liverpool in the Champions League games.

“Jurgen Klopp is a big fan of checking players in the real games in the face-to-face games, with his own Liverpool and he was really surprised by the impact of this fantastic striker.”

The Uruguayan will face competition with Portuguese striker Diogo Jota for the starting role, with Roberto Firmino likely to be the back-up forward this season.

Jota, 25, bagged 15 goals in the league last year and enjoyed a rich vein of form whilst playing down the middle last season.

Nunez offers a much more physical and powerful threat and will surely thrive from the service from Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

He will also be key on the break for the Reds, who often counter at such a ferocious pace.

His pace and willingness to run in behind were evident, not only against the Reds, but in most games he played last season.

Combining with two of the quickest players in the league in Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz is a frightening prospect for Premier League defences.
