Report: Liverpool beat Newcastle United to priority signing worth €100million

Liverpool won the race to sign Darwin Nunez ahead of a host of big clubs and Newcastle United reportedly made him their top target for the summer.

After scoring 34 goals in all competitions last season, Nunez was always going to be one of the most highly sought-after players in Europe.

With Sadio Mane leaving to join Bayern Munich, the former Benfica star will be the Senegal star's replacement and his arrival will require Liverpool to alter their approach in attack.

In many ways, Nunez is quite similar to Mane with both forwards lethal in front of goal and have some of the best movement in the game.

Mane and Nunez both excel when attacking the ball in the box. In particular, the new arrival will feast on the delivery into the box from the fullbacks.

However, his dribbling is nowhere near as good as Mane's while it remains to be seen if he can match his pressing from the front as well.

According to the Athletic, Nunez was made a priority by Newcastle although once it became clear what Benfica's asking price was, the Magpies "never realistically expected to win the race."

Liverpool splashed the cash to sign Nunez, agreeing on a deal worth a potential €100million.

With the new Premier League season just over a month away, excitement is growing around Nunez and what he can add to Liverpool's star-studded lineup.

He scored more goals than Mane last season but it's not really a fair comparison as the Portuguese Primeira Liga isn't on the same level as the Premier League.

That said, Nunez notched 26 goals in league football while also scoring 6 in the Champions League, including two 2 in 2 against Liverpool in the quarter-finals.

If he can match that form for the Reds, he will hit the ground running and reward FSG for their faith in him.
