According to journalist Alex Crook, Liverpool are in the race to sign Darwin Nunez ahead of Manchester United.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Crook says that United are not as close to signing Nunez as has been suggested in the Portuguese media.

Liverpool are, however, genuine contenders to land his signature as they face the prospect of losing Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich.

He said: “We spoke about Liverpool earlier, about Sadio Mane and would they replace him.

“Darwin Nunez, there is genuine interest from Manchester United, but a deal for him is not as close as has been suggested in the Portuguese media.

“I received a text message from a trustworthy source on Friday that Liverpool are genuine contenders for him.”

According to reports in Portugal, Liverpool have bid €100million (£85m) to sign Darwin Nunez.

They state the player has told Benfica he 'intends' to play for the Reds next season.

Jurgen Klopp even commented on the forward in his press conference before the second leg of the Champions League tie at Anfield.

"Really good, really good, I have to say," Klopp said.

"I knew him before, of course, but he played pretty much in front of me with these tough battles with Ibou Konaté.

"Physically strong, quick, was calm around his finish when he finished the goal off. Good, really good. Obviously how you say in these situations, if he stays healthy, it’s a big career ahead of him."

Liverpool must still beat Manchester United to his signature but if they have really bid for him, they have taken the first major step to winning the race for his signature.

Erik Ten Hag is looking to immediately improve the team he is inheriting from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick but if it comes down to a choice between the two clubs, Liverpool might have the edge.

The Anfield outfit has been one of the best clubs in Europe over the last four years and the opportunity to work with Jurgen Klopp is often more than enough to sway a player's decision making.
