Jordan Henderson shows how invaluable he is to this Liverpool team

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was arguably the Reds' best player on the pitch yesterday.

The midfielder saw himself playing alongside Fabinho at the heart of the Liverpool defence instead of in the midfield. The move did not stop his side from keeping a clean sheet in his side's 0-0 draw against Manchester United.

Once the line-ups had been announced the fear was how would that Liverpool back four deal with United's pace on the break?. The answer was that they coped very well as a whole despite the lack of game time together. They held their line really well as they managed to catch United offside eight times.

However, it was Henderson's individual performance that impressed fans the most yesterday. From breaking up counter attacks and leading his backline, Henderson did exactly what was asked of him.

Henderson has had to play at centre-back previously for the club with Southampton and Fulham being the most recent examples. However, this was by far Henderson's biggest challenge in that position. Henderson won his only aerial dual and won 50% of his ground duels (1/2) yesterday.

One thing the team have missed since van Dijk's injury is a defender with great distribution, despite Fabinho's best efforts. He completed 91% of his passes yesterday (79/87) and played one key pass.

This just highlights the importance of Henderson as not just a key member of this team but a valuable captain. The constant shouting and demanding more from teammates helps elevate the team to a level they would not reach if he was not there.

In a time where the club appears to be going through their toughest spell under Jurgen Klopp so far. We have to be thankful that we have a player and person like Jordan Henderson at our club.
