Michael Edwards masterclass would see Liverpool snap up £63m forward that has ended contract talks

Lautaro Martinez has reportedly broken off contract talks with Inter Milan as Barcelona chase him down but Liverpool need to be the ones to sign him.

Sport claims the Argentine forward is no longer negotiating a deal to stay at Inter Milan and Liverpool are interested. He'd be the perfect player to star as the focal point of the Reds' attack.

On May 12th, 90Min reported that both Manchester City and Liverpool requested that they be apprised of any developments in the Argentine's future and with the Guardian reporting on Sunday, May 31st that Inter are ready to sell, now is the time to strike.

Not only is the £63million-rated forward the perfect heir to Roberto Firmino, but signing him would also seemingly deny Manchester City of one of their top targets to replace Sergio Aguero, who has joined Barcelona.

In Serie A this season, Martinez scored 17 times while assisting 10 for teammates but it's not just his numbers that make him the ideal player to succeed Roberto Firmino but rather it's his work ethic.

There's every chance that Jurgen Klopp plans on replacing the Brazilian down the line not with a like for like alternative but with an entirely different style of attacker which would rule out someone like Martinez.

Of course, if he wants to keep his current tactical system in place and sign a young forward with the ability to match Mohamed Salah in terms of attacking output, Inter Milan's no.10 is his man.

What makes him the ideal player to replace Firmino isn't just his prolificacy in front of goal but a combination of that and his desire and willingness to chase down opposition defenders to win the ball back high up the pitch.

While he's really good at playing as the focal point of attack, he excels at linking play together and Romelu Lukaku has been the main beneficiary of his tendency to drop deep to collect the ball before turning his opposite number or spreading the play to the marauding Achraf Hakimi.

If the Guardian is to be believed and Inter Milan really are ready to let Martinez go, Jurgen Klopp should be on the phone to his representatives to propose a switch to Anfield as he really is the perfect replacement for Firmino.

The only barrier to signing him would be the financial details involved, with Transfermarkt valuing him at £63million.

Even then, with Inter Milan desperate for money, Liverpool would surely be able to present a deal that is agreeable to the Nerazzurri.

A front three of Sadio Mane, Martinez and Mohamed Salah would be devastating but also perfect for Jurgen Klopp's counter-pressing side.

It would be great to add another high-scoring forward to the side that could help alleviate the pressure on Salah.
