"I don't care if I go to jail": LFC legend recounts hilariously incredible story that took place in a hotel in 2007

Liverpool legend John Arne Riise has revealed what exactly happened between him and Craig Bellamy in the infamous 'golf club incident'.

His way of recounting the story is hilarious.

The incident has become folklore in football culture with Riise and Bellamy coming to blows days before a huge Champions League match with Barcelona.

Back in 2006/07, Liverpool were led by Rafa Benitez and met Barcelona in the round of 16 knockout tie at the Nou Camp.

Little did the fans know, at the time, that Riise and Bellamy had come to a disagreement in the build-up to the game in what was a brilliant story.

Speaking on the FilthyFellas podcast, he re-told the hilarious story detailing exactly what happened between the pair in 2007.

The story begins with the team out at dinner and winger Bellamy trying to get Riise to sing in front of everybody - the Norweigan played it down but as the night went on Bellamy had become drunker which led to the famed incident.

"We went into the Karaoke place and Bellamy took the microphone and said 'Riise's gonna sing' and I just lost it. I went up to him and said 'Listen, I'm not f****** singing so shut the f*** up or I'm going to smash you," he revealed.

"I was rooming with Daniel Agger in the hotel and then I could hear some keys in the door, so I thought it could have been Agger coming home. The lights come on and I turn around and there's Bellamy with a golf club in his hands."

"He comes in and starts shouting 'I don't care what happens!' I could see he was not sober! And then he took a swing at my shins!"

"So I said 'Let's do this the proper way - man to man' but no, he stood there saying 'I don't care if I go to jail, my kids have enough money, I'm going to f*** you up, no one talks to me like that in front of my players' and then he swung and I blocked it with my shins!" Riise explained.

"While I was standing there I was thinking if I do something now I'll lose my career at Liverpool. I said to him - 'Let's meet tomorrow at 9am, me and you tomorrow' so he agreed to that."

"The morning after I walk to his room at 9 o'clock with Dan (Agger) knocked on his door and he wasn't there." He walked in five minutes later and didn't look at me and then we had the meeting with Benitez."

"He said 'This case is closed, we've got a game in 2 or 3 days' or whatever and then he (Bellamy) scores the first goal, I score the winner that he assisted and we beat Barcelona 2-1 at the Camp Nou!"

The Reds went on to beat Barcelona, PSV and Chelsea in the knockout rounds before facing AC Milan in the final of the Champions League, losing 2-1 in the final in Athens.

A truly hilarious story.
