Find out Liverpool's special penalty kick routine - you've probably already noticed it

Liverpool have been highly successful for the last five years for a number of different reasons.

Their squad, manager and transfer business have all been key factors but the Reds have also utilised some unorthodox methods that have brought success.

For example, they enlisted the services of Thomas Gronnemark back in 2018 which has revolutionized the club's approach to throw-ins during his time at the club.

However, the Reds also have a special routine that happens whenever they have a penalty kick - something that was evident in the win over Manchester City.

What is the routine?

As explained by Football psychologist Geir Jordet, Liverpool have a special routine whenever they get a penalty kick which has begun over the course of the last few years.

Jordet explains it as a team approach to penalty kicks where they insulate & protect their penalty taker from potential opponent mind games. This leaves whoever takes the penalty (usually Salah) to then freely focus on the shot - usually resulting in a goal.

One example can be seen below showing the Community Shield game on Saturday - City players attempt to distract Salah before Thiago and Havey Elliot come over to shield them away from Salah.

Thiago then takes care of Ederson whilst Elliot watches over Salah before then helping to escort the City players away.

This is something he has described as coordinated team support which sees Liverpool completely take control of the situation.

Their record over recent years from the spot has been strong thanks to the consistency of Mohamed Salah, Fabinho and James Milner.

Combining all of their records, the trio have scored 23 out of 25 penalties since the start of the 2019/20 season.

Keep an eye out for this next time Liverpool get a penalty and you'll see the co-ordinated effort in action.
