Manchester United and Liverpool are keeping tabs on promising young American star Gio Reyna but will struggle to tempt him away from Borussia Dortmund.

The Sunderland-born American first burst onto the scene last season, scoring what can only be described as a jaw-dropping solo effort.

He received the ball outside the 18-yard area, with three players to beat before he curled the ball into the top corner from 20-yards. It was his debut and the first time the world knew his name.

It won't be the last.

A source close to Anfield Central has revealed that both the Red Devils and their age-old rivals across the M62, Liverpool, are keeping tabs on Reyna but understand that it will be very tough to convince him to leave Dortmund.

The 17-year-old has said that he doesn't view BVB as a stepping stone on the path to greater things.

In August, he told German publication Bild: "Right now, I am just very happy here and that is what counts.

"I'm not passing through here at Dortmund. It's a club competing for titles. The incredible fans alone make BVB something special."

While both Liverpool and United understand Reyna isn't thinking about leaving Dortmund at this moment in time, the young star dreams of moving to the Premier League one day and has been left impressed by the way Trent Alexander-Arnold developed into the best right back in the world.

Similarly, the ascension of Marcus Rashford and Marcus Greenwood from the United Academy to household names is something that appeals to Reyna.

With that being said, Liverpool's forward options include Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota, Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino.

And that's before Rhian Brewster and Harvey Elliott are considered. At United, Greenwood, Martial, Rashford, Dan James and Odion Ighalo would stand in Reyna's way. That's also before their interest in Reyna's teammate Jadon Sancho is taken into consideration.

That's another story entirely as Man Utd Central revealed on the weekend that Dortmund are growing tired of the Red Devils' stale negotiation tactics.

At Dortmund, it's much easier for Reyna to play first-team football and much like United's interest in Jude Bellingham, it seems as though the 17-year-old's decision to put BVB first is a sensible one.

For United and Liverpool, missing out on Reyna will not be a heartbreaking blow as both sides would not be able to benefit fully from his talent due to their respective attacking options.
