Liverpool announced today that Diogo Jota has signed a new contract with the club, but how important is this for Liverpool's future?

Jota, 25, has become a regular fixture in the Liverpool side in recent times.

Having seen his good form rewarded with regular minutes, he displaced Roberto Firmino as the main centre-forward.

His 15 goals and five assists in the league prove he's a key member of this Liverpool side and he should continue to be for the duration of his new deal.

Since joining from Wolves in the summer of 2020, the Portuguese forward has scored 34 goals in 85 appearances for the Reds.

His best run of form came last season as he totalled 21 goals and eight assists in all competitions. He averages a goal every 145 minutes and has been a success for the Reds so far.

He's also developed a taste for scoring against Arsenal - with seven in seven games in a Liverpool shirt against the Gunners.

"Well, [I'm] really proud, I have to say," Jota told Liverpoolfc.com after signing his new contract. "Obviously since I arrived two years ago I established myself as an important player in this team - that's what I wanted from the beginning.

"Now, signing a new long-term deal, it's obviously from the club's perspective proof of the belief in myself as a player. For me, obviously, it's really good to establish I'll be here for a while."

Jota also claimed that his injury setback will see him out of action for the 'next few weeks'.
