An Update on Gini Wijnaldum’s Future
Much has been made about the future of Georginio Wijnaldum as he approaches the last few months of his contract with Liverpool.
The contract saga between Liverpool and Wijnaldum has been well-publicized and drawn out. While there seems to be mutual interest in signing a new deal, agreeing to terms has proven more difficult than expected.
With under 100 days left on his contract, the clock is really ticking for the two sides to put pen to paper. On his “Here We Go” podcast, the reliable Fabrizio Romano provided an update on Wijnaldum’s situation.
On the podcast, Romano says: “90% Gini Wijnaldum will leave Liverpool. There is no agreement between Wijnaldum and Liverpool”.
He points out that the fact that a contract hasn’t been agreed as of yet indicates that it’s unlikely that circumstances change. However, he also says: “He has not decided 100% yet” - not ruling out a last-minute agreement between the two sides.
By far the biggest suitors for Wijnaldum’s services are Barcelona. The mutual interest between the two sides has been well-documented, with Wijnaldum interested in joining forces with Dutch compatriots Ronald Koeman, Frenkie de Jong, and potentially Memphis Depay.
Koeman’s allure with Wijnaldum has not waned. Romano indicates that “Ronald Koeman is in love with Winjaldum” and that Barcelona were close to signing Wijnaldum last summer.
However, a move to Barcelona may depend on Koeman’s future. If the former Everton and Holland manager were to be sacked, Wijnaldum could change course and resign with Liverpool or move elsewhere.
Unfortunately for Liverpool fans, it seems that Wijnaldum’s time on Merseyside is becoming more and more likely to end.
