Agreement to end £47.5M Chelsea transfer failure proves Michael Edwards made a very smart decision in 2019

With Timo Werner moving back to RB Leipzig, Liverpool fans have been shown that, once again, their club is one of the best when it comes to signings.

The latest reports have revealed that the Chelsea forward has opted to end his Premier League nightmare to move back to Germany.

Once upon a time, Liverpool were in pole position to secure the services of the forward from Leipzig in 2020.

The Reds' insistence on focusing on other targets paid dividends in the long run but it also shines a light on their transfer business in the Jurgen Klopp era.

Liverpool and Werner history

Back in 2020, Werner had flirted with the club and Klopp profusely which sparked real interest from the club.

He had also come off the back of a season with 34 goals and 13 assists which made him one of Europe's hottest attacking talents.

He had claimed that Klopp was “the best coach in the world” in the months leading up to his move to Chelsea.

There were reports that the German had been learning English as well as saying he would be a 'good fit' at Anfield.

According to Der Spiegel, the Reds had made a move for him in 2019, but the pandemic in 2020 saw them pull out and Chelsea won the race for his signature due to their financial power and backing.

Liverpool's shrewd business over the years

Whilst Liverpool declined the option of buying Werner, who may have been highly successful under Klopp, to buy Diogo Jota, fans were slightly worried.

Jota wasn't a big name and hadn't produced huge output for Wolves before signing for Liverpool - but the decision proved a masterstroke as Jota has taken to Merseyside brilliantly to score 15 goals in the league last season.

Over the years they've declined the signings of players with 'big names' and reputations in favour of the likes of Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Andrew Robertson and Georginio Wijnaldum to name a few who have all gone on to develop into top-class players.

Liverpool don't typically break the bank unless they are sure a player will be a resounding success.

The latest is Darwin Nunez, signed for £85M, but the Uruguayan looks to be a strong addition to Liverpool and the Premier League.
