Adam Lallana - How will he be remembered?

After almost six years at Liverpool, Adam Lallana is likely to depart the club when the season ends.

The midfielder signed a short extension to his current contract giving him the opportunity to play a part in the remaining nine games of the season which will almost certainly end with the Reds ending their 30-year wait for a league title.

The former England international will then move on with Leicester City being touted as favourites for his signature.

Since signing for the club from Southampton in 2014 it's fair to say Lallana has had a mixed time at the club.

Injury has hampered much of Lallana's Liverpool career but overall he should be remembered fondly by the Anfield faithful.

Lallana joins the Reds

After impressing for Southampton in the Premier League Liverpool secured the signature of Lallana paying the Saints a fee of £25million.

Lallana joined a Liverpool side that was still hurting from losing the league title to Manchester City and the departure of star man Luis Suarez to Barcelona. One of three Southampton players to make the switch to Liverpool that summer the club had brought in eight summer signings in the hopes of bolstering their squad for the Champions League.

However, it was the beginning of the end of Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool career. The Reds were knocked out of the Champions League in the group stages by Swiss side Basel and Lallana could only show glimpses of what he was truly capable of.

In October 2014 he scored his first goal for the club in a home victory against West Brom a strike that demonstrated his wonderful footwork and technical ability. He finished the season with just six goals to his name. A below-par tally for an attacking midfielder.

Fast forward 12 months and things looked even bleaker for Liverpool. Club captain and legend of the game Steven Gerrard followed Suarez out the exit door as did the up and coming Raheem Sterling.

Another season of transition for the Reds was confirmed when Rodgers was dismissed in October 2015 and replaced by a certain Jürgen Klopp whatever happened to him?

England's 'Player of the Year'

At the very start of his Liverpool revolution, Klopp quickly identified the talents Lallana had.

In the summer of 2016, Liverpool signed Sadio Mane (another Southampton import) and alongside Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho, the trio would form a formidable attacking unit.

But Lallana was the side's unsung hero. Whether it was from a deeper central position or occupying one of the front three spots, he played a key role as Liverpool secured their first top-four finish under Klopp.

Lallana contributed eight goals and seven assists including a goal in the final day victory over Middlesbrough which confirmed Champions League football would be back at Anfield.

He was unstoppable in the first half of the season but he only scored once after Christmas as he again struggled with consistency.

But the calendar year of 2016 is perhaps where Lallana played his best football for club and country.

As well as his performances for Liverpool he excelled for England in what was a year the Three Lions would rather forget after their Euro 2016 humiliation to Iceland.

In fact, he was named England's 'Player of the Year' in 2016 due to his fantastic performances for his country.

Injury woes

The last three years have been difficult for Lallana. Injury has restricted him to just 53 appearances since 2017 and his equaliser against Manchester United earlier in the season was his first goal for the Reds for more than two years.

Unfortunately, this is how his legacy at Liverpool is likely to be remembered by many. On his day he is as talented as any in Liverpool's squad. His Cruyff turns at Anfield have become infamous and his determination and work ethic has never been in question.

He is a player that Klopp clearly has a lot of admiration for and with Liverpool set for a quiet transfer window it wouldn't have been a total surprise for him to stay another year.

But it makes sense for the now 32-year-old to take the next step in his career.

A reunion at with Rodgers at Leicester looks likely and if he stays free from injury will certainly be a good addition for the Foxes.

He will leave Liverpool with another medal around his neck and the respect of Liverpool fans everywhere.
