Liverpool need 'workaholic' midfielder according to former player - surely £25M pressing machine is a perfect option?

Liverpool need to sign a 'workaholic' type midfielder, according to Graeme Souness if they want to compete again and Konrad Laimer is the perfect fit.

The Reds built their success on a strong, physical and hard-working midfield three of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum for most of the Jurgen Klopp era.

With Wijnaldum gone and the likes of Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all out of contract next summer, they will need to bring someone in.

Whether that's in January or next summer, it's very much needed and the former Liverpool player explained why a hard-working midfielder would help the Reds click again.

Souness claims Liverpool need an energetic midfielder

Former Liverpool player and current pundit Graeme Souness claims that Liverpool need to continue their trend of signing midfielders with a high work ethic if they are to get back to their winning ways long term.

He said: “I do think there is room in that midfield for another high-intensity workaholic who can also deliver a cute pass. Go back to Liverpool’s best midfield of three or four years ago. You had Gini Wijnaldum. Workaholic. James Milner. Workaholic.

“Jordan Henderson. Workaholic. Not the most gifted in terms of cute passing but relentless workers, all of them. The creativity was coming through the full-backs and the forwards.”

In that case, with the options on the market, it seems Konrad Laimer would be a great option given his work rate and availability as a free agent next summer.

The likes of Moises Caicedo will be extremely expensive given he's poised to sign a new deal.

Would Laimer be a good addition?

He currently is the most active presser in Europe, according to FbRef, and his energy and progressive qualities would be a breath of fresh air.

His injury record is very respectable overall, apart from one long term injury when he suffered an ankle fracture that meant he missed pretty much the whole 2020/21 season. Granted, he has just been ruled out for a few weeks with an injury to the same ankle, but overall his injury record is good.

Either way, if Liverpool could sign him for free next summer, it would be a shrewd deal.
