€15m Liverpool summer departure already named Ligue 1 'Flop Of The Season'

€15m Liverpool summer departure already named Ligue 1 'Flop Of The Season'

Former Liverpool player and cup hero, Takumi Minamino was named as one of the biggest flops of the season so far by French publication, Le Quotidien Du Sport.

They said, "Minamino seems too frail physically and struggling in the intensity of the duels, we understand why he did not win in the Premier League.

The Japanese international left Merseyside this summer for €15m, after only being trusted in cup games for Liverpool.

He wanted to find more first-team opportunities after playing a big role in Liverpool's domestic cup double win last season.

Minamino scored ten goals and assisted one in just 24 appearances, scoring the most goals in the Carabao Cup (4) and the second most in the FA Cup (3).

He showed that he has the quality to be a regular starter last season, but his chances were limited due to the pedigree of attackers in the side.

Flop of the season?

It hasn't quite gone to plan this season for Minamino at AS Monaco. He's played six games this season, averaging less than 60 minutes a game. He is averaging a SofaScore of 6.51 while missing one big chance and only taking 0.3 shots per game.

The 27-year-old is definitely having a slow start but he's showing signs of improving. AS Monaco lost 4-2 to Troyes, but Minamino got a goal contribution to his name. He assisted Guillermo Maripán who was later sent off.

Because of the red card, Minamino didn't make it to the second half as he was subbed off for a more defensive-minded player. He played 57 minutes in their Europa League victory over FK Crvena Zvezda and was left on the bench for the next two fixtures.

AS Monaco do have a quality player on their hands and definitely need to give him more time to settle in. It was rather harsh to brand him as the flop of the season without even playing ten games in France. He was really vital to our successes last season and if given the chance, he could unleash that side of him once again.

Minamino wasn't the only departing Liverpool player to be called a flop. Cult hero, Divock Origi, was labelled as the 'worst signing of the season' by Italian journalist Alvise Cagnazzo, in a report in the Daily Mail.
