Liverpool legend picks Man United star ahead of Reds midfielders

Arne Slot

Liverpool sit at the summit of the Premier League table and they are nine points clear at the top of the standings. The club are now runaway favourites to win the title at the end of the season.

The Merseyside giants have looked like a team in control in most games and their midfield engine room has played a big role in ensuring the Reds look secure and calm even against the best of teams.

Arne Slot has repurposed Ryan Gravenberch as an elite defensive midfielder and the Dutchman’s performances have made sure Liverpool are not paying for failing to sign a number 6 in the last summer transfer window.

Curtis Jones has emerged as a top midfielder this season and he has even been compared with Steven Gerrard with the former Liverpool captain praising his performance during his England debut last month.

However, Dietmar Hamann believes Manchester United have a player who is better than both the standout Liverpool stars.

He could be one of the best – Hamann lavishes praise on Man United star

The former Liverpool star admitted that Gravenberch and Jones’ performances have been a massive reason behind the Reds’ success this season and pointed out they have benefited the most from Arne Slot’s arrival.

However, he indicated that Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo is better than the Reds duo as he can both defend and attack, which is rare and makes him a unique talent.

Can you name the team Liverpool sold these players to?

Hamann insisted that the Manchester United midfielder can become the best holding midfielder in the world if he continues to play at this level.

“Liverpool are doing that [control the midfield] this season. That is a big part of their success so far and Ryan Gravenberch looks like a new signing”, the former Red told Genting Casino.

“Curtis Jones, he has been a revelation. Both players have been squad players at best in the last one or two seasons. They are vital players for the club now and this is what the managerial change has done.

“There are some fantastic central midfield players, but Mainoo is probably the one I’d be most interested in watching where he goes over the next couple of years.

“I think Mainoo can defend and attack, which is a good thing. When you play in central midfield with two players, I think it’s very important that you haven’t got similar players.

“You need players with different qualities that complement each other. I think Mainoo has discipline and if he wants to do it, he could be one of the best holding players. Then again, he gets his shot off. He’s got a trick as well. He can score goals.”
