Liverpool’s pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi remains ongoing after the Reds recently submitted another bid for the England international, according to reports.
In an ideal world, Richard Hughes and Arne Slot would have been pictured with Guehi back in August as the 25-year-old held up the famous red shirt of Liverpool for the first time; however, this was not the case.
Liverpool’s £35million bid for Guehi was rejected over the summer as Palace were prepared to see their captain enter the final year of his deal at Selhurst Park.
Seemingly, the Reds do not want to risk losing their top defensive target on a free transfer to a European rival, as Liverpool have made another approach for Guehi for the upcoming January transfer window.
Liverpool have made a £25million bid for Marc Guehi, per reports
Real Madrid are among the clubs said to be monitoring Guehi’s situation with Palace, as an opportunity to land a player of his quality on a free transfer next summer does not occur often in today’s transfer market.
According to reports from indykaila on X on 25 November, Liverpool do not want to risk letting the Guehi transfer saga drag out any longer, with other top European clubs sniffing around the defender.
The report claims a £25million bid with add-ons has been launched for Guehi, which has neither been accepted nor rejected by Crystal Palace, leaving Liverpool in limbo.
Sven Botman is also a defender linked with a move to Anfield, as tightening up a leaky defence is evidently a priority for Slot entering the January transfer window.
Liverpool should pay to get Marc Guehi deal over the line in January
Although the Reds could secure Guehi’s services for free next summer, it is far too risky to let the centre-half become a free agent due to the number of elite European clubs that will understandably be queueing up for his signature.
If Liverpool have to pay a fee to secure a player who could help solve their defensive woes, it would undoubtedly be money well spent, even if they are in the last year of their deal.
If Slot’s side do not turn their form around this season, next summer Guehi may feel that making the move to Merseyside is no longer as attractive a proposition as moving somewhere else, and that is a risk Liverpool cannot afford to take.
