Liverpool fall back as Manchester United interest grows in EPL attacker

Man United

Liverpool spent more than half of £440m+ on attackers this summer. The frontline was a huge subject for Arne Slot following major departures.

The main variable that contributed to that spending was Diogo Jota’s untimely passing. The Portuguese forward was caught in a car accident in Spain.

In a recent loss to Chelsea, manager Enzo Maresca was also asked about the player in a pre-match press conference. The Italian empathised with the club as he said the situation was difficult.

“It’s difficult. It’s also difficult to explain because there is no solution. You just have to deal with it. You cannot be better again”, Maresca told the press.

The likes of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz also saw the door in the summer. It was obviously going to be a big summer as Slot also hadn’t reaped the benefits of the title yet.

Liverpool were rumoured to be targeting Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo, but recent reports suggest that Manchester United hold the higher ground against the Merseysiders.

Caught Offside says, “their [Manchester United] interest is understood to be stronger than Liverpool’s, despite some rumours to the contrary.”

It is sensible that the Reds aren’t so keen on finding more attackers as their squad already features more than five attackers. Slot is covered on that front, but Semenyo remains on the Dutchman’s radar.

United, on the other hand, have been eyeing the winger since the summer. They couldn’t sign the Ghanaian international earlier as they deemed an overpricing of the player by the Cherries.

However, the Red Devils have since changed their views as they are now willing to make a big bid to bring Semenyo to Old Trafford.

Liverpool needs defenders

Despite not being short up front, the Merseysiders are definitely seeing problems in the back. Marc Guehi was the prime target as Jarell Quansah couldn’t continue with the limited playing time at Anfield.

However, things took an interesting turn when Crystal Palace blocked their captain’s move in the 11th hour. Following the disaster, the Reds were left with only four centre-backs in the squad.

Since then, star kid Giovanni Leoni has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and will not play for a year. Ibrahima Konate also went down against Chelsea, but the tensions have since lowered as the Frenchman has joined the national team during the international break.

Slot will be hoping to sign a few centre-backs in the summer, as the Dutchman will find it hard to defend the title with only three defenders to deploy.
