Liverpool ‘eyeing move’ for Brazilian international midfielder in January

Liverpool may be looking to add some depth to their engine room in the January transfer window.

Although the Reds can still retain their Premier League crown this season, Arne Slot will know his side has a lot of ground to make up after their shaky form in recent months, which has left them nine points behind leaders Arsenal.

Richard Hughes seems keen to bring another winger to Anfield to help Slot’s men kick on in the second half of the season, with Iliman Ndiaye being one of the names linked with a move to Liverpool.

However, amid much talk about Alexis Mac Allister and his form this season, signing another midfielder also appears to be on Liverpool’s agenda.

Liverpool linked with a move for Atalanta’s Ederson

With certain sections of the fanbase even calling for Mac Allister to be sold, it is clear that another midfielder should be brought in to provide the Argentinian international with fiercer competition for his spot in the starting XI.

According to reports from Indykaila on X on 1 December, Atalanta’s Ederson could be Liverpool’s newest midfield recruit, with the Reds reportedly “eyeing” a move in January for the 26-year-old.

The Brazilian, who has been capped for his country on three occasions, has been at Atalanta since the summer of 2022 and was notably a part of the team that defeated Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final back in 2024.

Atalanta also saw off Liverpool over two legs en route to lifting European silverware that campaign, with Ederson featuring in both matches against the Reds.

According to Transfermarkt, Ederson’s current market value is said to be around £39.5million, but it remains to be seen how much Atalanta will demand for their midfielder.

How much does Ederson earn currently at Atalanta?

With all the money spent by Liverpool over the summer, a potential fee nearing £40million seems relatively cheap.

According to Capology, Ederson earns just over £54,000 per week, which is a fraction of the £180,000 a week that Mac Allister earns.

Although a move to the Premier League would naturally come with a pay rise for Ederson, he could prove to be a cheaper alternative that Slot can actually rely on and provide competition for places.

Bringing the Brazilian to Merseyside would also allow Liverpool to sanction the sale of Wataru Endo, as it is clear Slot does not trust the 32-year-old, with the Japanese midfielder being limited to just one Premier League start since Slot took over as Liverpool boss.
