Liverpool eye sensational swap deal with Spanish giants

News of summer transfer plans continue to surround Liverpool this season.

The reds have signed two players since the start of last summer. Giorgi Mamardashvili joined from Valencia but was sent back out on loan till the end of the season. Liverpool also signed Federico Chiesa on a cut price deal from Juventus. The Italian’s time at the club has been far from successful. Chiesa has barely featured this season due to injury, and when he has, his performances have been questionable.

ESPN pundit Steve Nicol slammed the forward for his performance against Plymouth on Sunday:

“I know when they signed him it was a bit of a gamble because he’d been out injured for so long. But the pedigree the guy’s got, you would expect at least something from him today.

“The guy’s got a European winner’s medal. But he’s been an absolute bust today. If you’re Slot you’ll be lying in bed thinking, ‘I hope I don’t need him’.”

Liverpool are now out of the FA Cup, but still have three trophies to compete for.

The reds will be hoping they can do much better in the transfer market this summer. According to multiple reports, Liverpool are waiting till the end of the season before they make any changes to the squad. The futures of Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil Van Dijk will factor in any business in the upcoming window.

Football365 report that Liverpool are in talks with Barcelona over a swap deal for Frenkie de Jong. The reds are in the market for midfield additions this summer, and the Dutch international looks like a perfect fit. Luis Diaz will reportedly be offered in any exchange. Barcelona are a fan of Diaz, and pursued him last season.

Liverpool have a great change to make a huge addition to the first team squad. The reds have struggled in some games this season, when they have rotated. Having a player like de Jong available on the bench would allow Arne Slot to rest players without the drop off in quality.

Swap deal is a bad idea for reds

The move looks very enticing, and Frenkie de Jong is a very good player. However, the 27-year old has struggled to stay fit since he moved to Spain. This is part of the reason why Barcelona have been eager to offload him over the past few windows.

De Jong’s wages could also be problematic, he is currently on €365,385 per week in Spain. Moving Luis Diaz is a great option, but Liverpool may be put off be de Jong’s wage demands. The reds should avoid any deal for a player on high wages who can barely stay fit.
