£80M star opens up on failed Liverpool move

Liverpool have had their share of failed transfers over the past few years.

The reds have missed out on a lot of players in recent years. Liverpool’s recruitment policy valued paying reasonable market fees for first team players. Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino were players all signed for less than £50million in the past decade.

Liverpool are planning to make some major changes to the squad in the summer. The reds are looking to add players to improve the team in certain areas. Recent defeats to PSV and Plymouth Argyle have shown that Arne Slot cannot totally rely on the players outside the starting XI.

The futures of Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil Van Dijk will factor in the upcoming window. All three are set to leave when their contracts expire in the summer.

Anthony Gordon almost joined Liverpool in a swap deal last summer. The Magpies were willing to make a deal involving Joe Gomez to avoid breaking Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules. Gordon was to join Liverpool for £75million while Joe Gomez would move to Tyneside for £35million. The move eventually fell through after Newcastle sold Yakuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson.

During a recent interview, Gordon reflected on the failed move and his future with Newcastle:

“Because the club (Newcastle) has transitioned so quickly, other fans and other media outlets just pick the players… when we play well, it’s like ‘He’s got to move from Newcastle,’ but that’s not the reality. We’re fifth in the table, we’re a top club ourselves. It’s a load of rubbish, really.

“The project doesn’t really mean much to us, we all want to win now. People keep talking about the project from the outside because of how much the club has come on but that doesn’t really mean much to us.

“We’re trying to win now, we’re trying to win cups now, we’re trying to get back into the Champions League and if we do that then it’ll no longer be called a project will it because it’ll be what we want it to be.”

Gordon has six goals and five assists this season. He will face Liverpool in the League Cup final next month.

Reds could go in for Anthony Gordon again

Mohamed Salah is out of contract this summer. The club will either have to make him an offer he can’t refuse or let him go for free. Multiple clubs have already offered him contracts ahead of the summer. The 32-year old is reportedly open to staying, after being offered a new two-year deal by Liverpool.

Signing a player like Anthony Gordon would be a big step in replacing Mohamed Salah, they have similar styles playing out wide. In the case Salah stays at Anfield, Gordon would be a complementary piece in the Liverpool attack. Arne Slot is already looking to offload some players, including Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz.
