Liverpool told they're making the "same mistakes that Manchester United did"

Liverpool told they're making the "same mistakes that Manchester United did"

Liverpool's anticipated appointment of Arne Slot as their new head coach has been generating buzz, but not everyone is on board with the Dutchman’s impending arrival.

While the 45-year-old is set to take over from Jurgen Klopp, former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys has voiced his skepticism about Slot's suitability for the role, highlighting key concerns regarding his record and the pressure he'll face at Anfield.

Slot faces tremendous pressure replacing Klopp

Stepping into Klopp's shoes at Liverpool is no easy task.

Not only does Slot need to maintain the high standards set by his predecessor, but he must also contend with the immense pressure of leading one of English football's biggest clubs.

Liverpool's legendary status and demanding fanbase will require Slot to hit the ground running.

In his blog, Keys outlined that this challenge may be too much for Slot, questioning whether he has the right credentials to succeed at a club with such high expectations.

"I believe Liverpool are about to make the same mistakes that Manchester United did," Keys wrote.

"Arne ten Slot. Really? Not for me. And I'm not alone. There isn't a Liverpool fan that I've spoken to (who) isn't totally underwhelmed by the news ten Slot is going to replace Klopp."

Granted, Slot is not the most well-known coach but that's not always a bad thing.

Liverpool aren't the type of club to follow the crowd and more often than not, this has resulted in outperforming their rivals on the pitch and off it.

Only time will tell if Michael Edwards gets this one right too.

Slot's record and the role of Head Coach

While Slot's success at Feyenoord has been notable, Richard Keys pointed out that his record isn't necessarily on par with other successful managers in the Dutch league, like Erik ten Hag, before his move to Manchester United.

"Why ten Slot? (I know that's not his name but he's mini-me isn't he?). I guarantee you we'll hear all the same things they said about ten Hag when Liverpool finally unveil their man," wrote Keys.

"What you won't hear is an admission that he wasn't first choice. Or that his record in Holland isn't even as good as ten Hag's was."

Additionally, the nature of Slot's role at Liverpool is a point of interest.

Unlike Klopp, who had more influence as a manager, Slot is set to be the head coach, with much of the recruitment and football operations handled by Michael Edwards, the club's returning director of football.

Keys believes this distinction is crucial, indicating that Slot's scope of control may be limited.

Patience and a solid start essential for success

Despite the skepticism, Arne Slot will need time to implement his philosophy and gel with the Liverpool squad.

However, patience might be in short supply if the team's performance falters early in the season.

The onus will be on senior players to step up and help Slot navigate the intense pressure at Anfield.

"Slot will have to achieve a top-four finish, and not drag themselves over the line, but look comfortable," added Keys.

A solid start will be crucial for Slot, especially given Liverpool's recent struggles.

Much will depend on the summer transfer window and how well the club manages its recruitment.

If Slot can rise to the occasion, he could prove the doubters wrong and lead Liverpool to success in the new era post-Klopp.
